The Castile soap is made using saponified olive oil. It is purely an olive oil soap. Though many people are making homemade soaps using vegetable oils and without animal fats, they cannot be considered as pure Castile soap since Castile soap is made only from olive oil. The common ingredients that are used to make Castile soap are coconut oil, coconut soap, vegetable glycerin, water and natural fragrance. Castile soap without any fragrance is also available. Castile soap was first made in the Castile castle in the year 1567. Many soap makers still believe that the true Castile soap is the one made from 100% olive oil only. However, the lather that is formed by olive oil based Castile soap is very slim.

The required ingredients according to this recipe are 56 Ounces of Olive oil (grade A), 43 grams of grapefruit (pink) essential oil, 32 grams of Bergamot essential oil, 17 ounces of distilled water 7.359 ounces of lye. It is very easy to prepare liquid Castile soap from Dr. Bonners Castile bar soap. The bar soap is kept in a bag and water is added in the ratio 1:4.It is kept in a bowl for 5 days. The liquid Castile soap will be ready on the 5th day. This is the simplest method for making liquid Castile soap at home.
